SEO

Structured data is now how AI search learns who you are

Answer engines summarise rather than link. That changes what a site has to do: state its identity unambiguously, in a format a model can extract without guessing.

The shift

Classic SEO optimised for a ranked list of links. A growing share of search now resolves into a synthesised answer, with a citation or two attached. Winning that citation depends less on ranking position and more on whether a model can extract a correct, confident statement from your page.

The practical implication is that ambiguity is now expensive. If your site never states plainly what you do, where you operate and who you serve, a model will infer it — and inference is where hallucination lives.

State your entity clearly

Every organisation should have one page — usually the homepage, reinforced on an about page — that answers the basic identity questions in plain sentences: what the organisation is, what it does, where it operates from, and who it serves. Not as marketing abstraction. As statements.

Then back that with Organization schema containing the legal name, URL, logo, contact points and social profiles. Naming has to be consistent everywhere: one spelling, one capitalisation, across the site, the schema and every social profile.

The schema that earns its place

  • Organization — identity, logo, contact points, social profiles, areas served.
  • LocalBusiness — one per physical location, with address, phone and opening hours.
  • Service — on each service page, describing what is offered and by whom.
  • Article — on editorial content, with author, dates and headline.
  • BreadcrumbList — so the hierarchy of the site is explicit.
  • FAQPage — only where genuine questions and answers exist on the page.

That last caveat matters. Marking up invented questions to farm rich results is the kind of thing that works for one algorithm update and then stops.

Write answers that survive extraction

A self-contained paragraph that answers a question in two or three sentences, immediately under a heading phrased as the question, is far more extractable than the same information distributed across a page. Put the answer first and the elaboration after — the inverted pyramid, which journalists worked out a century ago.

If a paragraph only makes sense in the context of the two paragraphs before it, an answer engine cannot quote it.

The old work still matters

None of this replaces the fundamentals. A page that cannot be crawled cannot be cited. Core Web Vitals still affect what gets indexed and how often. Internal linking still tells a crawler which of your pages you consider important. Structured data is an amplifier for a technically sound site, not a substitute for one.

A short audit you can run today

Search your own organisation name in an AI assistant. Read what it says about you. Every inaccuracy in that answer is a gap in what your site states plainly — and the fix is nearly always to write the correct statement somewhere prominent and mark it up properly.

Next step

Turn the theory into a plan.

If any of this applies to your brand, the next step is a conversation rather than another article.
